What does a skincare ingredient checker do?

A skincare ingredient checker translates a product formula into useful context. Kelp can resolve a barcode or read an ingredient label, explain known ingredient roles, and compare the formula with your current weekly plan.

Two ways to scan

What if the product has no recognized barcode?

Start with the barcode. If it is not in Kelp's bundled product corpus, point the camera at the ingredient list and let on-device text recognition read the label.

  • Barcode scanChecks a corpus of 16,500 products bundled in the app.
  • Label scanReads printed ingredient text directly from the package.
  • No network lookupThe product and ingredient corpus is available offline in the app.

Plan-aware results

How is the product score calculated?

Kelp evaluates the known formula in the context of your current plan. It shows what the product matches, what the plan asked for and the formula misses, and where the two may clash.

The result includes a score out of 100 and the routine step where the product belongs. That score is contextual guidance, not a universal ranking of the product for every person.

Plain-language context

Will Kelp explain every ingredient?

Kelp's bundled corpus covers 4,600 ingredients. Known ingredients show a role and a short plain-language note. If the corpus does not have reliable information for an ingredient, Kelp marks it as no data instead of inventing an explanation.

Ingredient names on packaging can vary, and optical text recognition can make mistakes. Review the captured list when a label is curved, reflective, damaged, or unusually small.

Know the limit

Is an ingredient score an allergy or safety check?

No. Kelp does not know your complete medical history, patch-test response, product concentration, manufacturing quality, or every possible sensitivity.

Treat the result as cosmetic routine guidance. Follow the product label, patch-test when appropriate, stop using products that cause a reaction, and ask a qualified professional about allergies or persistent symptoms.

Important boundary

Cosmetic wellness guidance, not medical care.

Kelp describes visible cosmetic signals and helps you track a skincare routine. It does not diagnose, treat, or prevent a medical condition.

Seek a qualified clinician for painful, persistent, spreading, bleeding, infected-looking, scarring, or otherwise concerning symptoms.

Straight answers

Questions people ask before trying Kelp

Can Kelp scan products without a barcode?

Yes. Point the iPhone camera at the printed ingredient list and Kelp uses on-device text recognition to capture it.

Does the product scanner work offline?

The bundled corpus of 16,500 products and 4,600 ingredients is available offline. A guided skin analysis itself requires a network connection to reach the analysis service.

Is a higher product score always better for everyone?

No. The score is evaluated against your current Kelp plan and the formula information available in the app. It is not a universal product ranking.

Can Kelp tell me whether I am allergic to an ingredient?

No. Kelp does not provide allergy testing or a product safety verdict.

What happens when Kelp does not recognize an ingredient?

It marks the ingredient as no data rather than generating an unsupported role or explanation.
